What is so important about which players hockey stick being better than another?
I see literally hundreds of questions about which players stick a person should buy. (Which is fine, especially since I don't know my Sean Avery from a hole in the ground about which cellphone to buy)

I got news for you guys, as a former amatuer player myself (believe me, I defined amateur) it didn't matter which players stick was used because in the 70's we were lucky to even find an ice hockey stick around Philly. When we used street hockey blades on wooden sticks, we'd heat them either by torch or boiling water and curve them to our liking.

When the ice hockey sticks started to show up in the 80's (coinciding with Awesome Bill's regrettable retirement from the suburban Philadelphia area amateur hockey scene) we simply put them in a bench vise, torched them, and bent them using a rag in our gloved hand. Some guys wouldn't even use the vise, they'd heat the blade, put the torch down, then put the blade to the floor and bend it with their foot.

Just get a regular straight bladed stick, borrow a propane torch and bend it to your advantage. Do it a little bit at a time until you have a killer wrist shot.
It comes down to money, cha-ching!

A squirt aged player (10 and under) does not need a $120 composite hockey stick, nor do they need a pair of $300 skates. However, if you go to any squirt hockey game, you will find that the majority of the guys are using Easton Synergy or Warrior Dolomite sticks and the Bauer One95 skates. It really comes down to status. Mom and dad can't let little Johnny be shown up by using a wood stick when little Billy and little Stevie have composites.

The questions posted on here regarding this subject comes down to the people wanting to imitate what they see the players in the NHL using. They do not know enough about themselves as hockey players to find the right stick or other piece of equipment to suite the way the shoot, skate or otherwise. They don't realize it, but they are often hurting their own skills in the process.

I was still coaching when composite sticks were starting to become popular. Many of the early models provided terrible touch and made it nearly impossible to receive a pass. (Most of those problems have since been resolved.) I literally watched passes repeatedly bounce off one of my best player's sticks, a player who previously had no problems in this area. At one practice I put a wooden stick in his hands to prove my point and it immediately solved the problem but he refused to make the switch permanently. It ultimately cost him ice time because I couldn't depend on him to not make a mistake in a key situation.

It's not going to change. As long as the manufacturers continue to pump this overpriced equipment out, mom and dad are going to continue to buy it for little Johnny.
What can I see in my sky during this time of year?
I live in Connecticut, right on the border to New York. Im approximately 45 min. away from NYC. It's almost full moon and I live in a suburban area. I am also an amateur astronomer. I have been trying to name each star that I see. I located Spica, Regulus, Pollux and Castor, and I believe Capella and Menkalinan, with Arcturus. I don"t know if I am mixing up Pollux and Castor with Capella in the Auriga constellation I would also like to know if I can locate an galaxy"s nebulae or anything
Between the bright Moon and the light pollution from New York, you won't see very much this week! Once Full Moon is past, your sky will improve a bit. Here's a map of the light pollution in your area:
cleardarksky.com/lp/StmfrdObCTlp.…
Try to find a viewing location to your north, which should have darker skies.

Castor and Pollux are currently in the west northwest directly above brilliant Venus after the Sun sets. Capella and Menkalinan are to the right in the northwest. Castor and Pollux are almost identical to each other in brightness, whereas Capella is noticeably brighter than Menkalinan.

Spring is galaxy time, but galaxies are challenging objects if you have any light pollution. The brightest ones around right now are M65 and M66 in Leo, M81 and M82 in Ursa Major, and M104 in Virgo. Several bright globular clusters are in view: M3 and M5 near Bootes and M13 in Hercules. All of these are visible in binoculars or a small telescope. M57, the Ring Nebula in Lyra, is visible in any small telescope, but needs about 100x to be seen as a ring.
What do you think of my short story/image?
IMAGE FROM AN ORTHODONTIST"S PARKING LOT
She pulls her keys out of her pocket by the heart charm and opens the driver’s door of the blue PT Cruiser. “Let’s go,” she says sharply to the surly man on the passenger side.
“You don’t need to be a *****,” he bites back, clambering onto the seat.
“Don’t you call me that.” She slams her door shut and struggles to clamp the two ends of the seatbelt together over her beachball-size belly. “Stop acting like it’s my fault!”
“Oh, so it’s mine? Just say it.”
“Shut up, Jasper.”
“Whatever, *****.”
She pulls cautiously out of the space in front of the gynecologist’s office and slowly drives up to the red light.
“Mustn’t hurt Daddy’s car,” Jasper mutter sarcastically.
“You know perfectly well that it was a gift. Not that I’d expect you to understand the concept of being careful. You’ve already shown that.”
“Whatever,” he says carelessly, studying the pattern of the raindrops on the windshield.
“**** you,” she replies casually, as she inspects the growing folds of skin underneath her chin in the mirror.
The light turns and she creeps forward. “Wait! Stop the car,” Jasper commands. She brakes sharply in the middle of the intersection, and turns to him, ignoring the protests of the drivers behind.
“What now? The light’s green”
“Then don’t let me hold you up, Ally.” Jasper unfolds himself from the seat and opens the door, climbing out onto the pavement, and slamming the door.
Ally stabs her finger onto the button: the car window rolls down. “And where do you think you’re going?” Jasper’s back ignores her, walking around the puddles, to the sidewalk. “What about us? You wouldn’t leave us!”
“I’m sure your Dad can handle raising another greedy ***** just fine,” he shouts over his shoulder.
She sits there, unconscious of the rain on the leather seats, not hearing the silver Suburban behind her blaring its horn, watching him leave.

---So this is a very amateur effort by a very amateur writer (visit me at scrabblesnob on writerscafe.org), but curious to see what you think of it. Do you get what's going on? Is it interesting or predictable? Thanks...
yeah shes pregnant and he is leaving. but you did good.
Most annoying dumbshits in hip hop?
Some options;

People who think MC and Rapper are different. - (Usually white guys from the suburbs (but not limited to) who got into hip hop through amateur conscious rappers, and listened to krs one say some ignorant bullshit like "rappers spit rhymes that are mostly illegal, MC's spit rhymes that uplift they people." Ignoring the fact that many hip hop artists who've never spit "illegal" rhymes in there career consider themselves rappers, thus contradicting what krs one said in an instant through this social and cultural phenomenon.)

People who think rap is not hip hop. - (Usually 14 - 18 year olds just getting "deep" into hip hop, and have many self righteous definitions of what hip hop is. Ignoring most or all internal aspects of hip hop because when confronted with them they go into a streaking tantrum, reciting how mafioso rappers etc, can never be a part of hip hop because hip hop is reserved only for amateur conscious rappers, and songs with inspirational lyrics for the pseudo "deep" suburban guys.)

Old school was better because it had more meaning - (Usually 12-18 year old guys who hated rap before because it was all apparently meaningless, but then "corrected" themselves to seem open minded by saying that old school was okay because it had meaning. Forgetting that neither new age or old school cannot have a one set mind, thus cannot accordingly in consensus, follow one concept. So they forget many old school music was probably conflicting with there moral standards. That aside, meaning is what is significant to the individual not you alone. Sometimes these guys make their way "deep" into hip hop and love to share this ignorant view with there friends to show their non conforming nature.)

Me - (Such as complainers, haters, pseudo intellectuals, etc. Or just pick this if you got butthurt because I'm making fun of you and your belief about hip hop with good reasons not easily refuted. especially by dumbasses like you (you as in people who share those dumbass beliefs, and I assume you're dumb because you have those ignorant beliefs.)

Other - (There is much more people to hate, i think so. If you disagree then just pick me. If you're too unoriginal to come up with something for this option then gtfo.)

All of the Above - (speaks for itself.)

Nothing - (Man i'm so laid back and nothing phases me, i'm so cool. Brb i'm becoming an agnostic because i'm so open minded.(aka indecisive)
Do you like anyone?
Honestly, I think any intelligent person who has ever listened to rap falls under one of those categories.

Are you actually saying that there is something wrong with liking lyrical i.e "deep" rap?

And yes, I am one of those people who believe that an MC is different than a rapper. The term "MC" denotes a conception and demonstration of a role indicative of skill and of connection to the wider Hip Hop culture, while the latter term does not.

Because I believe this am I any more or less intelligent or ignorant than you? No. And Believe me I have no problem with elitists, I am one, but your just a dovchbag.

What should I photograph for my first photo contest (part of my county's agricultural fair this August)?
I'm a beginner & obviously an amateur photographer. My county (Montgomery County, MD - just north of Washington, DC & south of Baltimore, MD) is primarily suburban, but there are still some agricultural / semi-rural areas in the county. There are dozens of non-agricultural categories for entering photos at the fair, but I thought it would be nice to enter some pics of agricultural scenes & activities since it is still considered an agricultural fair. (One of the largest such fairs east of the Mississippi.) How can I find out when local farmers will be planting or harvesting crops if I want to shoot those kinds of activities. There are many local "Pick-Your-Own" farms in the county for various types of berries & vegetables, so that might be a good possibility. Any other suggestions would be welcome.
Is there a farmer's market? Find out when and where it is. It's a wonderful source! Not only can you ask farmers about planting/harvesting times while you're there, you can also get great photos of fruit or produce arrangements, people making a deal, etc.
How old do you have to be to be a cartoonist?
I'm 14 years old and currently a freshman in high school. I live in a suburban area thirty minutes from new york city. I have been drawing since i was five years old and from then on my skill has only increased. I draw during half my subjects, later to find my friends in gawk in what i have drew. I'm not trying to be arrogant however my skill is not amateur and i free draw no problem. I am seriously thinking about becoming a cartoonist, particularly a specialization in anime, as a career. I have found that i can free draw almost anything and draw with what ever tool i am supplied, pen, pencil. The one thing i find difficult to draw is animals, probably because i have spent the least time drawing them. My specialty is humans and mythical/ evil creatures. I have never taken an art class, and i have never "lossed skill" at drawing; basically, i have never got worse after a time of absense, it always stuck.
This is a link to a photo album i posted of drawings, the first one i drew about 5 minutes ago and te one before like 15 minutes ago, t is not my best work; i just wanted you to get an idea of what i like to draw. www.crunchyroll.com/showphoto?id=4305752265
I have other photo's in there i think. So in conclusion am i qualified to be a cartoonist, or what may i have to do? Thanks :D
I'll be bluntly honest, here.

I looked at the one link that worked (the quick sketch of a girl.)

It's not bad for a 14 year old who never took art classes, but you are not professional caliber, whatever your friends tell you. Not judging by that picture, anyway. You may have the potential to go pro eventually, but it will take hard work, and more skill than just the ability to draw manga characters.

Take art classes. Start now. Make sure your teacher knows you are serious about an art career, and not to coddle you. (Because they're used to guys who just want to be told 'nice work.') If you can't get into a class at your school this time of year, then check out a good book on drawing from your library Not one of those guys' 'You can draw Manga!!' type books, or the kinds that want you to draw shapes and fill in the details, but a serious book on how to draw. It should have information on shading, perspective, and composition. Study anatomy books for artists and cartoonists to make your figures more realistic.

And draw. A lot. But remember this (IMPORTANT)--if what you are drawing is easy for you, then you are learning NOTHING from drawing it. Keep pushing the bar. If you are used to drawing characters standing still, draw them in action poses, or in perspective from a bird's-eye or worm's-eye view. Whatever is frustrating and difficult challenges you to grow and improve as an artist. It will also help if you can find an instructor or at least another artist to help point out what you are doing wrong and where you can improve. Friends are easily impressed, especially if they can't draw themselves. Your mom isn't the place to go for constructive criticism, either. Find someone who will tell you how to improve, not boost your ego by telling you how awesome you are.

Making it in the pros takes more than talent. It takes determination, hard work and courage. If you have what it takes, and you are serious, you will be a better artist next week, even better next month, and amazingly improved next year. Because the really great artists NEVER stop learning and trying to improve their skills.

And the more you learn, the more you realize how MUCH there is to learn.

Good luck--hope to read your professionally published comics one day!
Car chaos? Road sabotages?
Commute in Houston has been going crazy(ier) because of road mayhem. It appears as if someone is sabotaging the roads to induce traffic chaos everywhere across the city.

Incidents like :
- Nails on the roads deflating tires (causes traffic back-up)
- Traffic cones placed in areas with no authority (dropping traffic elsewhere)
- Car bombs (empty cars, nobody killed yet)
- Gas station explosions (at night, empty)
- Debris all over the roads

Among other incidents.

I'm an amateur detective investigating, and I could use some help. I'm trying to guess who has the strongest motives. Either:

- An eco-group (hates cars in suburban Houston)
- Politician who didn't get the funds for his tollway
- Terrorist
- Random vandalism
- Auto union

So who do you think would have the strongest motive? Similar car chaos has been reported recently in Boston and San Francisco. I want to investigate leads. Now!
An eco-group (hates cars in suburban Houston)

WHY............I was recently in Houston and from what I saw, the people on the roads are very rude and one of them almost hit several cars so I called 911 to report this and the operator seem to give me the cool shoulder and was not that interested in this.........so I guess even the police hate cars..
Do you think James Gandolfini could become an established actor in film instead of just "Tony Soprano"?
Now, don't get me wrong. The Sopranos is, in my opinion, the greatest TV Show in the history of Television or shows. ("Firemen gettin' pussy for the first time in the history of fire or pussy.") And that series alone makes James Gandolfini one of my top ten favorite actors. But, and I can't stress this enough, he *needs* to have a strong film career to show off his versatility and acting chops. He doesn't have many film achievements thus far (True Romance, The Man Who Wasn't There and 8MM are probably the films he is most notable for..), but the future could establish him as respected film actor, and not just Tony Soprano.

First of all, he has Cinema Verite. A project directed by Robert Pulcini (American Splendor), and he will be acting alongside of Tim Robbins and Diane Lane. "A behind-the-scenes look at the making of the first American family to be the subjects of a reality TV show.".

After that, he is reuniting with Sopranos creator David Chase for a film called Twylight Zones, acting alongside of Christopher McDonald and Brad Garret. "Set in suburban New Jersey the 1960s, a group of friends form a rock band and try to make it big.".

Next, he is working on a project with Philip Seymour Hoffman and Meryl Streep under the direction of somebody I'm not too fond of, David Frankel (Marley & Me). "After thirty years of marriage, a middle-aged couple attends an intense counseling weekend to decide the fate of their marriage.".

Then (how does he have time for all of these!?), he is co-starring in the film Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close, with Tom Hanks, Sandra Bullock, John Goodman and, Max von Sydow. The project will be directed by Stephen Daldry (Billy Elliot) and written by Eric Roth (Forest Gump). "A nine-year-old amateur inventor, jewelry designer, astrophysicist, tambourine player and pacifist, searches New York for the lock that matches a mysterious key left by his father when he was killed in the September 11 attacks."

Finally comes the film I'm most looking forward to; Cogan's Trade. All I have to say about this is, look at the cast, and look at the director. www.imdb.com/title/tt1764234/

So, in closing, do you think these films will break him away from his Sopranos fame a bit? What do you expect from each of these films?
I'd really be fine with it either way... I'd love to see him in some great films and establish himself as a "Hollywood actor," maybe even get a few Oscar nominations. That would be great. But if he doesn't, I wouldn't be mad. I saw Michael Imperioli do an interview, and I remember him saying something like "if The Sopranos is the only highlight of my career in the end, I'd be completely fine with that." Which is right, but it would be great to see the two of them branch out into movies.

I'll see all of those upcoming movies that Gandolfini has, and I hope for the best...and most of them will probably be good. Either way I'll be satisfied, Cogan's Trade is gonna be epic

on a side note, have you seen Welcome to the Riley's? it stars him and Melissa Leo, I've been meaning to check it out.
Best video camera for an amateur movie in the 300-500 dollar price range?
I'm looking for an affordable digital camcorder to use for a short film I'm making. It doesn't need to be anything too fancy or high-tech, just something that will let me shoot good quality videos that will look good on a home TV or projection screen. The movie mainly consists of low-action scenes shot with good lighting, like in suburban houses or schools, but also has a couple of low light scenes, like in a mini-sub and suburban lawn at night. A port for an external microphone is a MUST. Any suggestions?
Best buy had some good camcorders for cheap and some have external microphone output. If your OK with ebay go with the canon hv20 350$. Take a look on youtube for test shots to see what the videos look like before you buy one.
